URGENT APPEAL FOR DONATIONS
A billion dollar corporation like Wal-Mart has millions to sell a supercenter to us, has millions to threaten lawsuits, has millions to launch an offensive to overthrow the General Plan, current zoning of the Annex, and to circumvent normal planning reviews. This is bad development!
Wal-Mart bought the land with full knowledge of its limitations, yet arrogantly proceeds with its colossal supercenter proposal. Wal-Mart believes the City will just roll over! While a historic victory for Atascadero, November's election results may not be enough. Those of us who oppose Wal-Mart's plan are in reality the last defense against this type of "bad" development.
We must continue to educate our neighbors to the unique threat a supercenter poses to our City's character, commercial diversity, economic welfare, and environmental integrity. The citizens of Atascadero can choose good development that consists of a sustainable, diverse, environmental and pedestrian friendly center that supports a vibrant downtown. Support City Council Members who stand for good development that is consistent with the vision and zoning of Atascadero's General Plan and its smart growth principles.
In order to accomplish this task, we need your help again. Please give generously what you can afford. With all of us pulling together, we can succeed.

The consequences of allowing a Super Wal-Mart to be built here are nothing short of disastrous!
A Super Wal-Mart will virtually eliminate the peace and tranquility of the Del Rio/El Camino neighborhoods with:
- 7-10,000 new car trips daily
- Bright lights that pollute the evening sky
- Endless noise from 24-hour truck traffic and deliveries
Our fledgling downtown just a short distance away will also be at risk. Grocery stores within several miles of the Super Wal-Mart will be threatened. Dozens of locally owned small businesses throughout Atascadero will begin to disappear, including tire stores, pharmacies, appliance stores, video rentals, and more.
It is not too late to stop them!
The Annex is currently zoned for both commercial and residential uses. The Rottman Annex Project is proposing an amendment to the General Plan that would change the residential zoning to commercial/retail, thereby paving the way for a Super Wal-Mart. OWM strongly opposes such a re-zoning.
Over 300 other communities have successfully stopped Wal-Mart from disrupting their quality of life by adopting ordinances that restrict the size of the buildings and/or the percentage of groceries in the box store. Cities from Santa Maria to Paso Robles have adopted such an ordinance, but not Atascadero! OWM wants to pass such an ordinance in our community.
OWM is dedicated to mobilizing Atascadero-area residents to send a strong message to Wal-Mart corporate headquarters, the Rottman Developers of the Annex and Atascadero City leaders that Wal-Mart is not welcome in our community. We need your help and contributions to make it happen!
